Interesting Limousine service (we didn’t get a chance to ride, just an observation)

The trip to Belfast was long and tiresome. We all felt tried from trekking around Montreal, and the two extended layovers did not help. 2 hours in Newark and 2 hours in London can be very boring. We all found things to do like walk around, listen to music or even read a book. Sleeping in a plane isn’t the same kind of rest; it only made us feel more tired. Luckily after 14+ hours of travel we landed in Belfast without much issue except for the turbulence (Scary!!!)

Upon Arrival at Belfast we decided to go check out the Hotel at 22 ORMEAU AVENUE, Belfast, BT2 8HS. We took a Gransha taxi to the hotel, and it took about 15minutes to get there

We arrived at the hotel at 2:00, the flight arrived at 10 in the morning, but we couldn’t check in to the hotel until 2:00, so we went sightseeing for a couple of hours in downtown Belfast.  We got two rooms for a total of $410.57 a night. We thought the two rooms would be best, because cramming five people into a room meant for four is not ideal.  Overall, we were very pleased with our stay.  The staff was very warm and accommodating.  The beds were very comfortable and the aroma in the room was freshening.  Best of all, the complimentary breakfast was exemplary, with the exquisite variety of foods available.  We definitely got our money’s worth out of our stay.

Food (Nathaniel)
For food, the group decided for a couple of the days to take a trip to the grocery store and take a sack lunch.  We went grocery shopping Monday morning at Tesco grocery store.  The total there came to $87.00.  We bought a number of materials for sandwiches, fruit, chips, and deserts for four meals.  It was interesting to have the opportunity to go to a grocery store in Ireland.  The food was incredibly delicious and fresh, especially the produce.
We also had the opportunity to go to CoCo Restaurant in Belfast for dinner one night.  We were really impressed.  For the price we paid we got a healthy, hearty meal and only paid $8-9 a head.  The service was really nice and accommodating.
Another night, we decided to go to a fine dining restaurant called Deanes Restaurant.  The food was very expensive and we were not sure we got a good deal on the meal we bought.  We felt that the $94.00 spent on the meal was not a good investment.  In addition, it took about 50 minutes for them to bring the food out to us after we had ordered our entrees.  The food was satisfactory, but not extraordinary, which we were expecting.  Quite honestly, it was overpriced.

For lunch one day, the group went to the Olive Tree Company, which sells fine wines, cheeses, salamis, and olives.  The prices were really great.  It was very interesting to taste the large variety of olives available.  It was actually really crowded considering how popular the place is, but the experience was satisfactory.
For the week, we spent a total of $744 on food.  For the most part, in regard to food, the group was satisfied.
Grand Total $2,874.03 for the week

Belfast, Northern Ireland: Attractions

1)   Botanic Gardens
Address: Botanic Ave,
    Belfast BT7 1 United Kingdom

-Established 1827

-In the center of the Botanical Gardens is the famous Palm House, home to many species of plants, some over 100 years old. It’s also interesting architecturally, being one of the earlier examples of a curvilinear (or domed) cast iron and glass structure.

-There is an extensive rose garden and many large rare oaks planted in the 1800’s.

-The Gardens are open 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and the Palm House is open 10 AM-5 PM Monday through Friday and 2 PM -5 PM Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free (a plus) and in the summer, the Gardens host shows and free brass band performances.

2)    See a show at the Grand Opera House:

-There are two shows the week we will be there:

1) Dancing Queen: A broadway-style musical featuring the music of Abba, complete with flashy choreography and costumes. The Show runs from Tuesday, September 28 through Tuesday, October 2nd. Evening performances are Tuesday-Saturday at 7:30 PM and matinee performance is Saturday at 2:30 PM. Prices are £9.75 - £24.25 depending on seating.

2) Sunshine on Leith: A musical centered around songs from The Proclaimers. Times are Tuesday the 5th-Saturday the 9th of October. Matinee Performances are Saturday at 2.30pm, a captioned performance is Friday 8 October at 7.30pm, and an audio described performance is on Satuday 9 October at 7.30pm. The cost is £8.50 -£28.50, once again depending on seating.
Here is a trailer for Sunshine on Leith:

-The Grand Opera House was opened December 23rd, 1895. In 1995 the theatre was taken over to be run by the Grand Opera House Trust, and in 2006 was extensively renovated and reopened on October 21st of that year.

-According to the Trust, “the magnificent auditorium is probably the best surviving example in the United Kingdom of the oriental style applied to theatre architecture"

Jennifer:

Of the two shows, I chose the Abba Musical, which was a lot of fun. We had great seats and the auditorium was amazing! We ended up paying for the £24.25 per person seats to really get the full experience. I wanted to get the CD from the musical, but they were sold out.
I loved walking around the Botanical Gardens and ended up taking it easy for a little while under one of the giant oaks. I'd found a little book store when we arrived and grabbed a few more things to read, including an Ender's Game in Spanish! I only spent £15.
All in all Glenariff Forest Park was my favorite park, that bridge was fantastic! We all slowed down for a little while out by the waterfalls. It was a great place to recover from Jet Lag, and by this point we were all kind of getting on each others nerves.
It was great the number of things we were able to visit for free, and that walking was so easy. We were tempted to get a taxi to the Botanical Gardens, since we were still feeling the time difference, but the 20min walk helped us feel better. The car we rented was so cute, and we really got to know each other better squeezing in there for the ride to the park.

2.) Accommodations (Jennifer)

The hotel we have chose to stay at is Hotel du Fort which is downtown. The address is1390 Rue du Fort, Montreal, QC, H3H2R7. It was booked through Travelocity.com, and it has a 4 out of a 5 rating on tripadvisor. We have a room suite with a king bed and and a pull out sofa. We'll still need to get a pull away bed, which cost us $20. We're staying in Montreal from Saturday, Sept 18th through Thursday, Sept 23rd.

3.) Natural Sites/ Monuments

a.) The Montreal Biodome (Erin)

-An ecologocial zoo and center for science suitable for both children and adults, as well as an interesting architectural attraction.
-The Biodome is divided into four ecosystems (Tropical Forest, North and South Poles, and Laurentian Forest), featuring a total of 4800 animals and 750 species of plants, as well as a bistro, gift shop, and cafeteria.
-It is recommended that a tourist allow at least an hour for a visit; I say about three and a half to four hours should be enough for us to explore the Biodome and eat lunch right there in the cafeteria or bistro.
-After September 7th, the Biodome is open from 9 AM to 5PM Tuesday-Sunday.
-To get there we can take a rental car or taxi, or better yet, public transportation.
“Take the metro (subway) to Viau metro station heading east from downtown on the green line. As you exit the station, walk west in the direction of the huge Montreal Tower (above) and Olympic Park. From May until October, a free shuttle service connects Viau station, the Biodome, Olympic Park and the insectarium.” (About.com) Address: 4777 avenue Pierre-de-Coubertin, Montréal, QC H1V 1B3. The cost is $16 for adults, but we may be able to get a student discount for $12.

*Since the Biodome is a zoo, we figured it would be a suitable “natural” attraction, and there certainly is a lot of information available about the Biodome itself. However, another natural attraction (and also a free one) highly recommended in a few travel guides we found is Mount Royal (or Mont Royal), a tall mountain and park area overlooking the city. A hike to the top provides a beautiful view of Montreal, and would make for a nice, relaxing afternoon one day of our trip.
FoodThe first day was the day we had the best luck with food. We ate at the Café Vienne in the Montreal Biodome. While there we got a fine herbs chicken bröchten, a chicken salad croissant, a spinach and feta cheese puff, a croquet monsieur (ham), and a brie cheese bröchten. Each of them was 7 canadian dollars. With a 5% sales tax that made the total $52.50 in Canadian dollars.
For dinner that night we went to Amelio’s at 201 Rue Milton, Montreal for pizza. We got a Medium Pepperoni and added green pepper and artichoke hearts, and a medium pepperoni and added ham and ground beef. Both pizza’s cost $22.50 each, and add 3 soft drinks, and two Snapples for $15.35 and the total comes out to $60.35.
We went to Le bilboquet after dinner for ice-cream. We got raspberry ripple, chocolate-orange, King Kong (chocolate and banana), mandarin, and a banana-split with chocolate and strawberry sorbet. The ice-creams were $6 with sugar cones, and the banana-split was $8. The total came out to $48 Canadian dollars. The address is 1311 Bernard W, Montreal, Quebec

b.) The Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art (Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal) (Erin)
-Address: 185 rue Ste-Catherine Ouest Montreal, Quebec. Public transportation (metro, taxi) would probably be the best way to get there, or we may even be within walking distance if we stay in the city. It shouldn’t be too difficult to get there.
-The museum features some permanent art exhibits and other rotating exhibits from other museums, locally and internationally.
-The museum primarily focuses on relatively local artists, namely artists from Quebec.
-Reviews said the museum is very good for it’s cheap admissions, and quiet, somewhat underappreciated. Students only pay $4 to get in to the museum.
-At 1PM and 3PM on Saturdays and Sundays, the museum offers free guided tours in both English and French, and from the reviews we've read, it is well worth it, especially if you don’t know much about art or the artists featured in the museum.
FoodWhen we went on the Basilique Notre Dame Montreal Tour we went to Chez Suzette Creperie at 3 St-Paul E, Montreal for lunch. We got a Jambon et fromage suisse (ham and cheese sandwich) at $8.95, a La Supreme de poulet crepe (chicken supreme)$14.95, a crepe poulet et epinards (chicken and spinach)$14.95, La Bavaroise crepe (bacon, avocado, and sour cream)$12.95, and a Crepe aux saumon fume (a smoked salmon crepe)$14.95. We also got 4 “boissons gauzeuses” (soft drinks) which were $2.50 each and a bottled water for $2.25. The total was $118.50 Canadian dollars.

Unlike most churches the stained glass windows are not biblical but the religious history of Montreal. In 1978 the church suffered a major blow as most of it had been burned caused by an arsonist. The rebuilding finished in 1982. Pope John Paul II raised the status of the church to Basilica.

FoodThe next night we went to Bar & Boeuf at 500 McGill, Montreal. This was our meal to splurge so the four of us split the 7 course tasting menu, which was $65, and we also got the Pasta of the Moment which was seasonal mushrooms, and bacon made with love, which was $20. We split a bottle of the house wine which was $35. The total came out to $180 Canadian dollars.

FoodFor lunch one day we ate at Fang chi on 3967 St-Antoine W, Montreal. We ordered pork dumplings, fried won tons, fried bananas, garlic chicken, beef with orange sauce, pork in Szechuan sauce, and shrimp fried rice. The total came out to $56.48 in Canadian dollars.

The last night we went to Papas Tapas-Martinis at 3547 boul. St-Laurent corner Prince-Arthur, Montreal. We split tapas which included everything from potato gazpacho, to a sausage tortilla, and a bison rib. Our total came out to $147 Canadian dollars, including the 4 martinis ordered, and some soft drinks.

The rest of the time we were mostly running around grabbing burgers and crepes where we could find time. We kept up with finances of course, but wouldn’t really recommend any of the other places we ate, though we did like the ice cream enough that we went back there a few more times. The rest of the food came out to $731.71.
